What Antares does
Antares is a nuclear fission company developing compact microreactors for defense and space applications.[1] It was founded in 2023.[1] It operates facilities in Torrance, California; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Aiken, South Carolina.[1] Its reactor design produces between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt of electricity.[2] The reactor uses TRISO fuel, which encapsulates uranium in carbon and ceramic shells.[2] Its Mark-0 demonstration reactor reached criticality on June 4, 2026, at Idaho National Laboratory.[2],[1] The company says it was the first privately developed non-light-water reactor to reach criticality in the U.S. in more than four decades.[1] Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital and Industrious Ventures also participated.[1] Antares is one of three finalists in the Pentagon's Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, which will test reactors on Air Force bases in Colorado and Montana.[2]
Business model and customers
The money funds the Mark-1 electricity-producing reactor planned for 2027 and first deployments to defense customers in 2028.[1]
