Quick answer

AI crawlers come in three kinds. Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, meta-externalagent, CCBot) collect data for models. Search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) index pages so AI answers can cite them. User-triggered fetchers (ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, Claude-User) load a page when a person asks. Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended are robots.txt tokens, not crawlers. You can block training and keep AI search by disallowing only the training tokens.

GPTBot
OpenAI
Model training

Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's generative AI foundation models.

โ€œDisallowing GPTBot indicates a site's content should not be used in training generative AI foundation models.โ€

UA: Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko); compatible; GPTBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/gptbot

Yes
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
openai.com/gptbot.json
OAI-SearchBot
OpenAI
Search index

Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search results. Blocking it removes you from ChatGPT search answers.

โ€œSites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.โ€

UA: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/131.0.0.0 Safari/537.36; compatible; OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot

OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply to search.

Yes
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Disallow: /
openai.com/searchbot.json
ChatGPT-User
OpenAI
User-triggered fetch

Visits a page when a ChatGPT or Custom GPT user's request needs it. Not an automatic crawler.

โ€œBecause these actions are initiated by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply.โ€

UA: Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko); compatible; ChatGPT-User/1.0; +https://openai.com/bot

OpenAI: ChatGPT-User is not used to decide whether content appears in Search; use OAI-SearchBot for that.

OAI-AdsBot

Checks landing pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT. Only visits submitted ad pages.

โ€œOAI-AdsBot only visits pages submitted as ads, and the data collected by OAI-AdsBot is not used to train generative AI foundation models.โ€

Anthropic
Model training

Collects public web content that could contribute to training Anthropic's models.

โ€œWhen a site restricts ClaudeBot access, it signals that the site's future materials should be excluded from our AI model training datasets.โ€

Anthropic publishes the token, not a full UA string. It also supports the non-standard Crawl-delay directive.

Anthropic
User-triggered fetch

Fetches a page when a Claude user asks a question that needs it.

โ€œDisabling Claude-User on your site prevents our system from retrieving your content in response to a user query, which may reduce your site's visibility for user-directed web search.โ€

Unlike most user-triggered fetchers, Anthropic says its bots, including Claude-User, honor robots.txt.

PerplexityBot
Perplexity
Search index

Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results. Not used for foundation-model training.

โ€œPerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity. It is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.โ€

Google Search's crawler. Google says Googlebot's robots.txt rules are the control for AI Overviews and AI Mode, because AI is built into Search.

โ€œCrawling preferences addressed to the Googlebot user agent affect Google Search (including Discover and all Google Search features), as well as other products such as Google Images, Video mode, Google News, and Discover.โ€

Google and Bing: no separate AI crawler

Google says AI is built into Search, so Googlebot's robots.txt rules are the control for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google-Extended only covers Gemini training and grounding. Google's AI optimization guide also says Search ignores llms.txt. Bing likewise has no AI token. It uses the noarchive and nocache meta tags to control Copilot answers.

FAQ

What is the difference between GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User?

GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search; OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a ChatGPT user's request needs it, and OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it because the action is user-initiated. Each is controlled separately in robots.txt.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. It controls whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the control, and nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex limit what is shown.

How do I block AI training but stay visible in AI search?

Disallow the training tokens (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, meta-externalagent, MistralAI-Training, CCBot) and leave search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and bingbot allowed. The copy-paste snippet on this page does exactly that.

Do AI crawlers respect robots.txt?

The automated crawlers documented here say they do. User-triggered fetchers are different: OpenAI (ChatGPT-User), Perplexity (Perplexity-User), Google (user-triggered fetchers), Amazon (Amzn-User) and Meta (meta-externalfetcher) all say these may not follow robots.txt because a person asked for the page. Anthropic is an exception: it says its bots, including Claude-User, honor robots.txt.

How can I verify that a request really comes from an AI crawler?

User-agent strings can be spoofed. Most vendors publish their crawler IP ranges (OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic, Google, Apple, Amazon, Mistral, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Common Crawl), and Google and Apple also support reverse DNS checks. The table links each vendor's list. Meta's crawler page publishes no IP list.

Does llms.txt control AI crawlers?

No. robots.txt is the control every vendor here documents. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt, so it neither helps nor harms Google visibility, though some other services may read it.

How is this list kept accurate?

Every row marked verified was checked against the vendor's own documentation on October 16, 2026, and the quote shown under each bot is copied from that page. Bots with no reachable vendor documentation (Bytespider, cohere-ai, YouBot) are labeled Unverified. The full dataset is available as JSON under CC BY 4.0.

Last verified against each vendor's documentation. Spotted a change? Tell us.
