Every layer of the stack is getting an 'AI-native' rebrand right now, and most of it is marketing. Convex's pitch is more credible than most because the problem is specific and real -- agents genuinely do generate more type errors and sync bugs than human developers on standard SQL backends -- but I'd want to see a disclosed error-rate number from OpenAI or Zapier before I fully buy the differentiation over Supabase.

Convex, the application-backend startup founded by former Dropbox infrastructure engineers, closed a $57 million Series B on Tuesday led by Insight Partners, with Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, Etna Labs and angel investor Justin Kan also participating. The round brings the developer-tooling company's total outside funding to $110.5 million, following a $26 million Series A in 2022.

Building the Backend AI Agents Can't Break

Convex sells a pre-packaged application backend -- database, real-time sync, server functions -- that now powers nearly 2 million applications, with customers including OpenAI and Zapier. Its pitch for this round is specifically about the AI-agent coding wave: Convex's database replaces standard SQL queries with TypeScript to cut type errors, and it pre-packages common tasks like real-time data syncing that AI coding agents otherwise struggle to generate correctly, positioning itself as the backend layer built for a world where a growing share of application code is agent-written rather than human-written.
