Analysis
AvalonX, an AI-powered offensive security startup based in Alpharetta, Georgia, has emerged from stealth with up to $10 million in funding from Ridown Capital, according to a PR Newswire release.
What AvalonX does
AvalonX's Artemis platform uses autonomous agents to test a company's defenses the way a malicious actor would, combining a continuous subscription service with human penetration testers for validation. The platform runs on what the company describes as a proprietary 400-billion-parameter security AI called Aether. CEO and co-founder Craig Goodwin is a former CISO at Fujitsu, Monster and CDK Global; he and co-founders Ricardo Valdes and Ben O'Nion say they bring more than 50 years of combined security and technology experience, per the release. The company launched publicly in October after 18 months in stealth. The subscription model is designed to replace or supplement traditional annual penetration-testing engagements, which security teams typically run once or twice a year, with continuous, always-on testing that the company argues catches vulnerabilities between scheduled audits.
A funding disclosure with real gaps
Ridown Capital, the investment firm of Onecom co-founders Aaron Brown and Darren Ridge, is the only investor named in AvalonX's announcement, and the release does not state a round type, a valuation, or any earlier funding. No independent outlet has yet corroborated the announcement beyond the company's own release, so the $10 million figure and every detail around it should be treated as company-supplied until a second source confirms it. Single-source funding announcements are common for security startups emerging from stealth, where founders often want initial press coverage before disclosing full terms to a wider set of outlets, but it leaves outside observers unable to independently verify the amount, the investor's stake, or whether Ridown Capital is a financial or strategic backer.

The autonomous pentesting market and competitors
AvalonX is entering a field that's small in absolute terms but growing fast: the global agentic AI autonomous penetration testing market was valued at approximately $180 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $2.8 billion by 2034, a 42.3% annual growth rate, according to MarketIntelo.
The category already has well-funded players:
- Horizon3.ai -- the clearest leader, raised $250 million in a Series E at a valuation above $2 billion in August, according to SiliconANGLE.
- Pentera -- positions its platform around AI-driven exposure validation.
- XBOW -- markets itself as a fully autonomous AI hacker running complete attack chains.
AvalonX's raise is modest next to other cybersecurity rounds this month, including Upwind Security's $400 million Series C at a $3.8 billion valuation.
Proving it against a funded leader
AvalonX is a single-source, single-investor story for now, entering a market where Horizon3.ai alone has raised 25 times as much capital. Whether AvalonX can land paying customers and a second funding round, or a second named investor, before a well-capitalized incumbent closes the gap is a real risk a single press release can't answer. AvalonX's leadership brings genuine enterprise security pedigree through its founders' CISO backgrounds, but pedigree alone hasn't been enough to unseat incumbents in adjacent categories before, and the company will need to show it can win logo customers quickly to justify further institutional investment beyond Ridown Capital's initial check.
