Accounts the system can't confidently classify as adult default into the teen experience, which strips romantic and sexual roleplay, blocks self-harm and suicide-related content, and adds a Study Mode that walks users through problems with guiding questions instead of direct answers, per CNBC.
The launch follows a wave of lawsuits alleging ChatGPT contributed to teen suicides and severe mental-health harm -- litigation that named OpenAI specifically over conversations in which the chatbot allegedly failed to de-escalate or redirect users expressing suicidal ideation. TechCrunch's framing is pointed: OpenAI is rolling out teen-specific safeguards years after teenagers became a substantial share of ChatGPT's user base, not ahead of that usage curve.
OpenAI isn't alone in retrofitting child safety onto a product built for a general audience. Meta is defending a child-privacy trial in California over similar allegations tied to its own AI products, and Character.AI -- which faced its own wrongful-death lawsuit in 2025 -- has already rolled out under-18 restrictions on romantic-roleplay features. Google has not announced comparable age-prediction infrastructure for Gemini, leaving OpenAI and Meta as the two frontier-model providers furthest along on this specific safeguard.

Parental controls are the more durable part of the release: guardians can set quiet hours during which a teen's account can't access ChatGPT, restrict whether the product uses a teen's conversations for memory or model training, and opt into notifications if the system detects signals of acute distress. Age prediction is rolling out first in the US, with EU availability delayed to account for the region's stricter data-processing rules around inferring a minor's age from behavioral signals.
For founders building consumer AI products aimed at any audience that could include minors, this is the compliance bar moving in real time, not a future requirement: age-prediction infrastructure, distress-detection, and parental-control APIs are becoming table stakes rather than differentiators, and building them retroactively -- as OpenAI is doing here -- is more expensive and more litigation-exposed than building them in from the start. Investors underwriting consumer AI should be asking every portfolio company with a teen or young-adult user base whether it has an age-prediction plan before a lawsuit forces one.
The counterweight: age prediction based on behavioral signals is inherently probabilistic, and OpenAI has not disclosed a false-negative rate -- how often an actual minor gets misclassified as an adult and misses the safeguards entirely. A system that defaults uncertain accounts into the teen experience errs toward over-restriction for adults, not under-restriction for minors, but the lawsuits driving this launch were about the failure mode in the other direction, and a rollout announcement is not the same as data proving that rate improved.
